HEADLINE: MedicalWorks GAMES TESTED BY LOCAL TEENS IN SCIENTIFIC USER STUDIES.

Scotts Valley, California, January 15, 2003 – San Lorenzo Valley Teen Center students are eager to participate this week in scientific user studies facilitated by the Health Software Evaluation Center (HSEC) to assist in the development of MedicalWorks’ online health and tobacco cessation game.

“The majority of our teens either smoke or have tried cigarettes. If game software can assist our students in quitting smoking, that would be great,” said Amy Hoppin, San Lorenzo Valley (SLV) Teen Center Administrator. “Our students see this opportunity to participate in the user studies as a chance to contribute to something important and that helps build their self esteem.”

These SLV Teen Center user studies are the latest evaluations performed by HSEC for MedicalWorks, a developer of health-focused game software. MedicalWorks has a long standing relationship with HSEC, a nonprofit software testing organization that provides unbiased scientific measurement of the effectiveness of MedicalWorks’ products.

MedicalWorks’ current product under development is an online community that functions as a forum in which teens can assist each other to stop smoking through chat and mini-games. Focus Studies are being held throughout 2003 in cooperation with the SLV Teen Center, Santa Cruz County and Santa Clara County public schools.

“Our previous smoking cessation game, Mind & Mayhem, experienced impressive efficacy results when tested across the United States in cooperation with the Minnesota American Lung Association,” said Cheryl Kelmar, CEO of MedicalWorks. “With an online community, it’s our intention to reach even more youth who struggle with tobacco addiction.” The SLV Teen Center, a program of the SLV YouthFirst organization, provides the San Lorenzo Valley Community with a safe place for teens to congregate. Through a collaborative effort with many valley agencies, community members and funders, the SLV Teen Center provides supervised recreation, academic support, job skills and training, community service opportunities, workshops and mentoring to teens throughout the San Lorenzo Valley, from Bonnie Doone to Boulder Creek.
